Overview

Fog inside a camera housing is one of the more frustrating failures in underwater and water-adjacent photography, because it usually isn't obvious until you're already in the water and the dome or port has gone hazy from the inside. Unlike a smudge on the outside, internal fog can't be wiped away without opening the housing -- which means prevention has to happen before the housing is sealed, not after.

Fog is also frequently confused with a leak, and the two are handled very differently. A leak means water intrusion and is an urgent problem; fog is condensation from trapped humid air and, while it ruins a shot, it doesn't necessarily mean the seal has failed. Knowing which one you're looking at matters before you decide whether to abort a session.

Why fog forms inside a housing

Fog is condensation, and condensation needs two things: humidity trapped inside the housing at the moment it's sealed, and a temperature difference between the air inside the housing and the surface it touches -- typically the inside of a cold dome port once the housing enters the water. Warm, humid air holds moisture invisibly until it contacts a cooler surface, at which point that moisture condenses into visible droplets.

This is why fogging is more common in warm, humid climates and less common in cooler, drier ones, and why it tends to show up more on the first dive or session of the day than later ones, once the housing interior has had time to stabilize. It's also why sealing a housing in an air-conditioned room and then walking straight into hot, humid outdoor air can sometimes make fogging worse rather than better -- the trapped air itself may be cool and dry, but a large temperature swing between sealing location and water temperature still creates the conditions for condensation on the inside of the port.

The amount of humidity trapped at assembly matters more than most people expect, because the air pocket inside a sealed housing is a fixed, closed volume for the rest of the session. Whatever moisture is present when the housing closes is the moisture that has to condense out if conditions allow it -- there's no ongoing exchange with drier outside air once the seal is closed. That's part of why the same housing can behave differently session to session even with an identical route to the water: a few extra minutes in a humid car, or assembling right after a shower steamed up the bathroom mirror, changes the starting humidity level noticeably.

The goal, in practice, is to minimize both the amount of trapped humidity and the temperature gap the housing will experience once it's in use. Neither factor alone fully explains a fogging problem -- a housing sealed in dry air but plunged into very cold water can still fog somewhat, just as one sealed in humid air but used in water close to ambient temperature may fog less than expected. Treating both as levers to pull, rather than looking for one single cause, tends to produce more consistent results across different locations and seasons.

Acclimation time matters

Sealing a housing immediately after moving it from an air-conditioned space into hot, humid outdoor air -- or the reverse -- increases the temperature differential the housing has to deal with once it hits the water. Giving the housing, camera, and surrounding air a few minutes to acclimate to the temperature and humidity it will actually be used in before final assembly can reduce how sharp that differential is.

This is a small, low-cost habit rather than a guaranteed fix: it won't eliminate fog risk on its own, but it removes one variable that otherwise stacks on top of trapped humidity and a cold water surface. Pairing acclimation time with the humidity-control steps below is more effective than either alone.

If you're assembling gear at home before a shoot and won't reach the water for an hour or more, the acclimation benefit mostly disappears by the time you actually submerge the housing, since the trapped air inside has already settled to room conditions rather than the assembly location's conditions. In that case, focus more on minimizing trapped humidity at assembly than on timing the assembly location itself.

Anti-fog inserts

Anti-fog inserts -- small reusable or single-use packets placed inside the housing before sealing -- work by absorbing some of the humidity trapped in the air pocket around the camera, reducing the moisture available to condense once the housing cools. They're a widely used accessory precisely because they address the root cause (trapped humidity) rather than trying to manage the symptom after the fact.

Placement matters: an insert needs airflow around it to absorb moisture effectively, so tucking it into a cramped corner where it can't contact circulating air inside the housing reduces its effectiveness. Many housings have a manufacturer-suggested mounting spot for an insert, often near the rear door or a spot with clear airflow to the dome -- using that location, if one is specified, tends to outperform an improvised placement squeezed in wherever there's leftover space.

Most inserts are reusable after a reactivation process (commonly a period of drying or gentle heating) described by the manufacturer -- follow that guidance rather than assuming an insert works indefinitely without attention, since a saturated insert stops absorbing new moisture. Track roughly how many sessions or how much time an insert has been through if you're reusing it repeatedly, since visual cues (a color-change indicator, on inserts that have one) aren't present on every product, and a quietly saturated insert offers no better protection than no insert at all.

Inserts are a mitigation, not a guarantee. A housing sealed in very humid conditions, with a large temperature gap to the water, can still fog even with a fresh insert in place -- they reduce the odds, they don't eliminate the physics involved. Pairing a fresh insert with a dry assembly space and reasonable acclimation time gives you the best realistic odds, but no combination of habits removes fog risk to zero in every climate and every water temperature.

Seal discipline

A consistent sealing routine matters as much as any single accessory. Assemble the housing in the driest available space, wipe down the camera and housing interior with a lint-free cloth if there's any visible moisture, and avoid breathing directly into the housing cavity while working, since exhaled breath is warm and humid and adds directly to the trapped-air problem.

Check the door or main seal for grit, hair, or lint before closing, since a clean, undamaged seal is also the first line of defense against a genuine leak -- a separate and more serious problem than fog. Housings that have sat unused for a while benefit from a quick inspection of the O-ring or gasket for flattening or cracking before the next session, following the manufacturer's guidance on grease type and inspection interval.

A pre-session dry test in a sink or shallow container, before entering open water, is a reasonable habit for confirming the seal holds under light pressure before you're relying on it in the ocean.

What not to do

Don't place bare silica gel or a similar loose desiccant directly against the port glass or lens elements -- if it shifts during handling or entry into the water, it can scratch or smear the optical surface. Use a proper anti-fog insert designed to sit in a fixed position, or a housing manufacturer's recommended mounting point for a desiccant packet, rather than improvising with a loose pouch near the optics.

Don't over-grease O-rings in an attempt to "extra-seal" the housing against both leaks and fog. Excess grease attracts grit and dust, which can itself compromise the seal, and grease doesn't address humidity or temperature differential at all -- it's unrelated to fog prevention despite sometimes being lumped in as a general "waterproofing" step. Use the manufacturer-specified amount and type only.

Don't assume a housing that fogged once is now unreliable or leaking -- fog and leaks have different causes, and a fogged session doesn't necessarily indicate seal damage. But don't ignore repeated fogging either, since it can also point to a genuinely humid assembly environment that needs to be addressed with better inserts, drier assembly conditions, or both.

Finally, don't try to open and "air out" a housing mid-session in the field, especially near water or sand, as a fix for fogging -- this introduces far more risk of actual water or grit intrusion than the fog itself. Wait until you're back in a controlled, dry environment to reassemble.

Final thoughts

Fogging is a humidity and temperature-differential problem, not a mysterious housing defect, and it responds well to a consistent routine: a dry assembly space, acclimation time when practical, a properly placed anti-fog insert, and disciplined seal checks every session. None of these habits is a single silver bullet on its own -- it's the combination, applied consistently, that produces reliable results across different conditions.

It's also worth accepting that some sessions will fog despite doing everything right, particularly in extreme humidity or a large water-temperature gap from your assembly environment. Treat a fogged session as useful information about that day's specific conditions rather than a sign that your routine has failed -- adjust the insert, assembly location, or acclimation time next time, and keep a mental note of which combinations of climate and water temperature tend to give you trouble.
