Overview

A dry bag's job is to protect gear that isn't currently in use during a beach or boat session -- spare bodies, lenses, batteries, cards, and anything else you don't want exposed to spray, sand, or a sudden dunk while you're focused on shooting. It's a between-shots protection layer, not a housing, and understanding that distinction shapes what to expect from it.

Dry bags vary widely in construction quality, capacity, and padding, and the right choice depends on what you're actually carrying and how it will be handled -- carried on your back, tossed in a kayak, or set down on wet sand at the water's edge. This guide walks through construction, padding, capacity, buoyancy claims, packing habits, and post-session care.

Roll-top and welded-seam construction

Roll-top closures seal by folding the top of the bag over on itself a specific number of times -- per the manufacturer's instructions -- before buckling the ends together. Under-rolling is the single most common reason a roll-top bag lets water in despite being a generally reliable design; a rushed two-fold roll doesn't seal the same way a proper three- or four-fold roll does.

Seam construction matters as much as the closure. Welded seams, where the material is fused rather than stitched, generally resist saltwater intrusion better than stitched-and-taped seams, since stitching creates small needle holes that taping only partially covers. If a bag's product description doesn't specify welded seams, treat it as a lower-tier option for repeated saltwater use, even if the roll-top closure itself looks similar to a higher-end bag.

Material thickness and coating type also affect how a bag ages under coastal use. A heavier-gauge tarpaulin-style material generally resists abrasion from being set down on rocks or a boat deck better than a lighter, backpacking-oriented fabric, at the cost of some extra weight and bulk. If your typical use involves rough surfaces -- boat decks, tide pools, rocky points -- prioritize abrasion resistance over minimizing weight; if you're mostly on sand and carrying the bag on your back for distance, the lighter material may be the better trade-off.

Padded inserts

A padded insert system -- a separate cushioned liner that sits inside the outer dry bag -- adds protection against impacts: gear bouncing around in a moving boat, getting set down on rocks, or shifting in a car trunk on a drive to the beach. The insert and the waterproofing are two separate jobs handled by two separate layers, and it's worth thinking about them that way rather than assuming a padded bag is automatically more waterproof, or a waterproof bag automatically well-padded.

If your gear is already inside a rigid case or housing before it goes in the dry bag, a padded insert may be unnecessary bulk -- a simple unpadded roll-top can be enough when the gear inside has its own impact protection. Padding earns its place when the dry bag is the only layer between your gear and a hard bump.

Insert systems also vary in how they're organized -- some use fixed dividers, others use adjustable hook-and-loop partitions that can be reconfigured for different gear combinations. If your kit composition changes session to session, an adjustable divider system is generally more useful long-term than a fixed layout sized for one specific lens-and-body combination that may not match what you're carrying next time.

Capacity planning

Size the bag to the kit you actually carry on a typical session, not the largest capacity available. An oversized bag leaves gear shifting around loosely inside during handling, which increases the chance of impact damage even with padding, while an undersized bag forces awkward packing that stresses the closure and makes a clean roll-top seal harder to achieve.

If your kit changes noticeably between sessions -- sometimes just a camera and a couple of batteries, other times a full housing setup with spare lenses -- it's reasonable to own two dry bags at different capacities rather than compromising on a single size that's wrong for either extreme.

Capacity is usually listed in liters, and it's worth translating that number into your actual gear rather than trusting the figure alone -- a camera body, two lenses, a battery case, and a rain shell can fill a bag's stated capacity faster than expected once you account for the irregular shapes of camera gear compared to the soft, compressible items dry bags are often sized around. When in reviewing a specific product, checking real dimensions against your gear's dimensions is more reliable than capacity in liters alone.

Buoyancy is not guaranteed

A dry bag full of air can float, but that's a side effect of trapped air, not a rated safety feature, unless the product specifically states a buoyancy rating for a stated weight of contents. Don't assume a general-purpose dry bag will keep a heavy camera and lens kit afloat if it goes overboard -- weight, how full the bag is, and how much air is sealed inside all affect whether it floats or sinks, and none of that is guaranteed behavior.

If flotation matters for your use case -- shooting from a kayak or paddleboard where a dropped bag could sink in deep water -- look specifically for a bag with a stated buoyancy rating for your kit's weight, and consider a tether to the boat or board as a backup rather than relying on flotation alone.

Packing tips

Squeeze excess air out before sealing a roll-top bag if flotation isn't a goal for that particular trip -- a fuller bag with less trapped air is generally more stable and less prone to shifting contents than one that's been left puffed up with air.

Pack heavier items (bodies, housings) toward the bottom or center, and softer items (cloths, cables) around the edges as cushioning, rather than letting hard edges rest directly against the bag's seams. Keep the closure area itself completely clear of any protruding item -- a strap buckle or lens cap pressed into the roll during closure is a common, avoidable cause of a compromised seal.

If you're packing multiple loose items rather than one padded insert, consider grouping them in smaller pouches or wraps inside the main bag first. This keeps small items like lens caps, cables, and cards from migrating to the closure area during transport, and makes it faster to find a specific item without unpacking the whole bag on a windy, sandy beach.

Rinsing and drying after saltwater exposure

Rinse the outside of the bag with fresh water after any saltwater exposure, even if the contents stayed completely dry -- salt residue left on zippers, buckles, and seams accelerates wear and can stiffen roll-top material over repeated exposure without rinsing. A quick rinse takes a minute and meaningfully extends a bag's usable life.

Air-dry the bag fully open rather than rolled or sealed, since trapped moisture inside a closed bag can encourage mildew and odor, particularly in a padded insert that holds moisture longer than the outer shell. Store it open or loosely rolled once fully dry, not tightly packed away while there's any residual dampness.

Pay particular attention to buckle hardware and any metal hardware on the strap system, since these components corrode faster than the fabric body of the bag itself. A brief rinse and dry of the hardware specifically, even on days when you skip a full bag rinse, helps buckles continue clicking closed reliably rather than seizing up or corroding to the point of failure.

Final thoughts

A well-built dry bag comes down to a properly executed roll-top seal, welded seams for saltwater durability, padding sized to what's actually inside, and a rinse-and-dry habit after every saltwater session. Buoyancy, if you need it, has to be an explicitly stated rating -- not an assumption.

None of this needs to be complicated in practice. Once the routine is established -- roll correctly, rinse after saltwater, dry fully open, inspect before the next trip -- a good dry bag is one of the lower-maintenance pieces of a coastal kit relative to how much protection it provides.
